RESPIRATOR FIT TEST

As of January 1, 2017, the NCDA&CS now requires Worker Protection Standards (WPS) stating that a respirator fit test and medical clearance card are necessary to mix, load, handle, or apply any pesticide that requires the use of a respirator, as prescribed by the pesticide label. Pesticide inspections by the
NCDA&CS will require documentation from anyone who mixes, handles, or applies pesticides requiring a respirator on the product label to have an ANNUAL medical clearance and respirator fit test regardless of whether the person is a licensed applicator. This means even employees, supervised workers, and family that utilize these pesticides will need to maintain this documentation.

We do not maintain a list of all pesticides requiring a respirator, as prescribed on the product label. However, these products include: Paraquat Lorsban, and Acephate. We highly encourage you to read the labels of ALL products you have and apply to determine if they specifically require the use of a respirator.

Due to the vacancy of agriculture positions in neighboring counties, agents in Stanly County will be organizing an opportunity for all pesticide applicators to be trained, medically cleared, and documented to safely utilize a respirator and apply products requiring a respirator.

N.C. Cooperative Extension is working with Occupational Team Solutions to offer another fit testing and medical clearance certification on Wednesday, March 28th.
The cost is $85 per person.

There are very few opportunities across the state to receive this training, respirator fit test, and health clearance certification. This will likely be the last opportunity until August of 2018.
