2022 Halifax County Adult Online Nutrition ClassesEating Smart, Moving More with EFNEP flyer.

Hello,  I am Chrissy Barbrey. I am the nutrition educator for the Expanded Food and Nutrition Education Program (EFNEP). EFNEP is just one of the many free programs that are offered through N.C. Cooperative Extension,Halifax County Center.

Since the beginning of COVID I’ve been trying to find a way to make participation in my programs less difficult and not “just one more thing” that you have to do. Now EFNEP is offering all 9 of our lessons online. This makes participation easy and not time too consuming (approximately 30 minutes per lesson).

Since my program is federally funded I do have guidelines/criteria for enrollment. Participants MUST have minor children in the home AND be participating in at least ONE of the following programs:

  • Free/Reduced Lunch
  • Head Start
  • Snap (EBT Card)
  • TANF (Temporary Assistance for Needy Families)
  • WIC
  • Medicaid
  • Work First

There are 9 lessons and they are all very helpful topics:

  • Course 1 – Smart-size Your Portions (Week of July 4th)
  • Course 2 – Choosing to Move More Throughout the Day (Week of July 11th)
  • Course 3 – Making Smart Drink Choices (Week of July 18th)
  • Course 4 – Plan: Know What’s for Dinner (Week of July 25th)
  • Course 5 – Shop: Get the Best for Less (Week of August 1st)
  • Course 6 – Choosing More Fruits and Vegetables (Week of August 8th)
  • Course 7 – Fix it Fast, Eat at Home (Week of August 15th)
  • Course 8 – Fix it Safe (Week of August 22nd)
  • Course 9 – Shop for Value, Check the Facts (Week of August 29th)

So many of you may ask “Why should I take these courses?”  I can tell you many reasons, but I will start with 2. The first one is your health, and the second one is your money. Do you want to be healthier and fight chronic disease, and do you like to save money? Right now food prices are at an all time high, and many people are struggling to put healthy meals on the table. Every single one of these courses mean more money in your pocket if you are able to start practicing some of the easy steps that you will learn. They also mean healthier meals and habits for you and your family.

If you OR a family member are interested in  enrolling,  you can email me at chrissy_barbrey@ncsu.edu or call me at 252-583-5161. I will email you a welcome letter and a short online entry form. I will send you the login information, and once a week beginning the week of 7/11/2022 you will complete 1 short lesson. Then you will complete 1 each week (at your convenience), until you have completed each of the 9 courses. Upon completion of the lessons, you will let me know that you have completed all 9 lessons. I will then send you a short Exit form. After 9 weeks, I will enter ONLY participants that have completed these steps into a random drawing. The last week for completing the 9 week course is the week of 9/5/2022.  The drawing will be completed the week of 9/12/2022, and I will notify the winners. The prizes are as follows:

  • 1st Prize – Instant Pot Duo 6 Quart Electric Pressure Cooker, Slow Cooker, Rice Cooker
  • 2nd Prize – Hamilton Beach 10-Cup Food Processor & Vegetable Chopper
  • 3rd Prize – Blue Professional Kitchen Knife Chef Set
  • 4th – 43rd – $25 Food Lion Gift Card
