ALBEMARLE, NC – For the first time in approximately 19 years, the spotlight of youth excellence will shine on Stanly County as it prepares to host the NC 4-H South Central District Activity Day (DAD) event. On June 17, 2026, South Stanly Middle School will transform into a hub of youth development and public speaking, welcoming hundreds of families from across the 19-county district.
A Milestone Event for Stanly County
District Activity Day is a high-stakes competition where top-performing 4-H members, ages 5-18, take their researched presentations to the next level. After succeeding at the local county level, these youth competitors advance to the district stage to present on topics ranging from livestock and cooking to electricity and performing arts. For the local community, hosting this event is a significant undertaking that rotates through 19 different North Carolina counties each year. "This is an opportunity for our county to showcase its hospitality and support for youth development," said Mandy Smith-Thompson, Stanly County 4-H Agent. "It has been nearly twenty years since we last held this honor, and we are eager to provide an excellent experience for these young leaders, including seven from right here in Stanly County."
The Call for "Community Champions"
To ensure the event runs smoothly for the hundreds of expected visitors, Stanly County Extension is seeking approximately 45 adult volunteers from the community. Organizers emphasize that no prior 4-H experience is necessary to participate, as all volunteers will receive training.
Volunteer Roles & Responsibilities
The primary goal for volunteers is to serve as "Door Hosts" and logistical support. Because these youth have spent months practicing their presentations, the environment must remain quiet and professional. Volunteer duties include:
● Door Hosting: Ensuring presenters are not interrupted by managing classroom entry and
exit between sessions.
● Logistical Support: Assisting families with parking and navigating the South Stanly
Middle School campus.
● Training: A brief walk-through and orientation will be held on the afternoon of June 16,
the day prior to the event.
Why It Matters
Volunteering for District Activity Day offers a front-row seat to the future of North Carolina leadership. By serving as hosts, community members provide the encouragement and structure these youth need to build confidence and communication skills that will last a lifetime.
